Welcome
Thornthwaite is a traditional family run farm set amidst superb scenery in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria. We offer a range of pet friendly self-catering accommodation from cottages through to a "stone tent" or camping barn with static caravans in between. Being in a quieter corner of the Lakes, you can avoid the worst of the traffic often associated with the central Lake District. And as we are not to far from the likes of Coniston or Grizedale there is still plenty to do and see within the local area.
The estate overlooks the beautiful Woodland Valley, the whole 500 acres can be explored by our guests.

As part of our little piece of the Lake District, we also have 60 acres of ancient woodland, areas of rare raised bog as well as traditional hay meadows. We recently received an award for our environmental policies. The area is a bird watcher’s paradise, with wildlife including deer, foxes and badgers.

Where we are
This maybe something that many lay claim to but we are within the Lake District, only 3 miles from the south end of Coniston Water. Broughton-in-Furness, where the nearest shops are, is only 2 miles away.

Get here by car...
Leave the M6 at Junction 36. Follow the A590 signs for Barrow until Greenodd Estuary.
Look for signs to Workington, turn RIGHT onto A5092. After 3 miles at Gawthwaite on a hill there is a right hand bend onto fenced moor-land, look for Woodland sign on the RIGHT.
Follow the fell road to the end, approx. 3 miles.
Turn LEFT at the T-junction. There is a public footpath signed to Woodland Hall after 200 yards.
Turn RIGHT up the drive. Go over the cattle-grid through the woods and continue up the lane past Woodland Hall gates until you come into the farmyard.
If you miss the first sign then carry on to the petrol station at Grizebeck. Just before the garage turn RIGHT for Woodland, then follow the lane for 2 miles past a farm and cottages, continue over a cattle-grid and carry on until the road is level approx. 1 mile. Our sign is on the left.
Getting here some other way...
It is possible to get into the area using public transport (see the links to the right), this will however require some walking. You can get a train to Ulverston then a bus to Grizebeck then walk in from there.
If you are a more serious walker then you can reach us by making use of numerous footpath leading down from Coniston.
